From conversations with the KICK users we learned that the better diffuser is robust. You are concerned about gear that falls apart in the bag. We made the shell a single piece with a small snap-on frame on the top, which holds the diffuser front plate. We looked at several foldable solutions but foldable means hinges and many more potential points of failure. The diffuser is small enough to fit in the bag even if it is not foldable.
Nanotechnology (reducing light loss 1)
Light loss is another challenge. Any diffuser will have some light loss. You may have used a traditional softbox and noticed that you easily lose a whole stop of light, sometimes more. Would it be possible to direct the light without losing any of it?
Diffusing light means changing the direction of some of the light. Diffusion may happen on the surface – using roughening techniques (surface diffusion) – or the magic can happen inside the bulk material (bulk diffusion). Our goal was to control the diffusion of light well and keep the transmission ratio as high as possible. Ideally all the light that the KICK sends into the diffuser would come through, just spread out in optimal angles and haze ratios.
The material we use for the KICK diffuser is a newly developed hybrid nanomaterial, which combines bulk diffusion with surface diffusion for a fantastic result. Inside the bulk material there is a myriad of nanoscale plastic drops. The diffractive index of these plastic drops differs from that of the bulk, and this causes diffusion of light.
The combination of such bulk diffusion and an active optical surface yields excellent optical results.
High Output (reducing light loss 2)
In any diffuser, there is bound to be some backscatter – light that gets reflected backwards instead of coming out through the diffuser front plate. In order to recycle as much light as possible the inside of the KICK diffuser shell is coated with a so-called hyper-white material.
Whilst a typical commercial white paint reflects about 85–88% and the reflection drops rapidly in the blue end due to the use of titanium dioxide as a pigment; our hyper-white coating reflects 98% of the light and provides the same reflection for all wavelengths. The reflective material we use is optically stable and has a lambertian reflection pattern to assist color mixing.
